2. How Does the Calculator Work?

The calculator uses the following formulas:

  • \(\text{Fuel Amount}\): Amount of fuel needed (liters, convertible to US/UK gallons)
  • \(\text{Distance}\): Distance to travel (km, convertible to miles or nautical miles)
  • \(\text{Fuel Efficiency}\): Fuel efficiency of the vehicle (km/L, convertible to other units)
  • \(\text{Fuel Price}\): Cost of fuel (per liter, convertible to per US/UK gallon)
  • \(\text{Total Trip Cost}\): Total cost of the trip (in selected currency)
  • \(\text{Cost Per Person}\): Cost per individual passenger (in selected currency)
  • \(\text{Number of Passengers}\): Number of people sharing the cost

Steps:

  • Enter the distance to travel, selecting the unit (miles, km, nautical miles).
  • Select a vehicle model and driving condition (City, Highway, Urban and Highway) to use predefined fuel efficiency, or choose Custom to manually input fuel efficiency.
  • View the selected vehicle's fuel efficiency in L/100 km (displayed below the dropdown when a predefined vehicle is selected).
  • If Custom is selected, enter the fuel efficiency, selecting the unit (km/L, L/100 km, US mpg, etc.).
  • Enter the fuel price, selecting the unit (per liter, per US gallon, per UK gallon) and currency.
  • Enter the number of passengers.
  • Convert distance to km, fuel efficiency to km/L, and fuel price to per liter if needed.
  • Calculate the fuel amount, total trip cost, and cost per person using the formulas.
  • Convert the fuel amount to the selected unit (liters, US/UK gallons) and display the results.
