How to Calculate Water Hardness

The Water Hardness Calculator determines the total hardness of water based on calcium (Ca²⁺), magnesium (Mg²⁺), and iron (Fe²⁺) concentrations. The formula is:

\( \text{Total Hardness (ppm)} = 2.497 \times [\text{Ca²⁺}] + 4.118 \times [\text{Mg²⁺}] + 5 \times [\text{Fe²⁺}] \)

Where concentrations are in mg/L. Iron is optional. The result can be converted to:

  • PPM (mg/L CaCO₃): Direct result.
  • GPG: PPM ÷ 17.118.
  • °dH: PPM × 0.056.

Classification (PPM): Soft (0-60), Moderately Hard (61-120), Hard (121-180), Very Hard (181+).
