SAFE Score Calculator

How to Calculate SAFE Score

The SAFE Score estimates the risk of liver fibrosis in patients with steatosis using a logistic regression model.

FORMULA

The SAFE Score is calculated by the following formula:

\( \text{SAFE Score} = -75 \)
\( + (2.97 \times \text{Age [years]}) \)
\( + (5.99 \times \text{BMI [kg/m², capped at 40]}) \)
\( + (62.85 \times \text{Diabetes [yes = 1, no = 0]}) \)
\( + (154.85 \times \ln(\text{AST [U/L]})) \)
\( + (-58.23 \times \ln(\text{ALT [U/L]})) \)
\( + (195.48 \times \ln(\text{Globulin [g/dL]})) \)
\( + (-141.61 \times \ln(\text{Platelets [×10⁹/L]})) \)

Notes:

* Globulin is calculated as Total Protein (g/dL) - Albumin (g/dL).

** BMI is capped at a maximum of 40.

Enter the values and calculate the result.

Note: Ensure valid inputs; all values must be positive, and globulin > 0.

Using the SAFE Score Calculator

This calculator aids in estimating the risk of moderate or higher liver fibrosis in patients with steatosis.

Input age, BMI, diabetes status, AST, ALT, albumin, total protein, platelets. The calculator computes globulin and outputs the SAFE Score and risk level.

Example 1: Age 50, BMI 30, No diabetes, AST 40, ALT 50, Albumin 4, Total Protein 7, Platelets 250.

  1. Age: 50
  2. BMI: 30 (capped at 30)
  3. Diabetes: 0
  4. AST: 40, ln(AST) ≈ 3.689
  5. ALT: 50, ln(ALT) ≈ 3.912
  6. Globulin: 7 - 4 = 3, ln(Globulin) ≈ 1.099
  7. Platelets: 250, ln(Platelets) ≈ 5.521
  8. Score ≈ -75 + (2.97*50) + (5.99*30) + (62.85*0) + (154.85*3.689) + (-58.23*3.912) + (195.48*1.099) + (-141.61*5.521) ≈ -10.23
  9. Risk Level: Low

Example 2: Age 60, BMI 45, Yes diabetes, AST 80, ALT 60, Albumin 3.5, Total Protein 6.5, Platelets 150.

  1. Age: 60
  2. BMI: 45 (capped at 40)
  3. Diabetes: 1
  4. AST: 80, ln(AST) ≈ 4.382
  5. ALT: 60, ln(ALT) ≈ 4.094
  6. Globulin: 6.5 - 3.5 = 3, ln(Globulin) ≈ 1.099
  7. Platelets: 150, ln(Platelets) ≈ 5.011
  8. Score ≈ -75 + (2.97*60) + (5.99*40) + (62.85*1) + (154.85*4.382) + (-58.23*4.094) + (195.48*1.099) + (-141.61*5.011) ≈ 112.45
  9. Risk Level: High

Use for risk stratification.
